Chapter Nineteen
When Callie pulled into the driveway, she saw Hank and Lulu sitting on the porch. Before she could get out, Hank was at the car door, yanking it open. He took her hand as she slid out and pulled her into his arms. He didnât have to pull very hard because she was already moving in that direction.
Throwing her arms around his neck, Callie stretched for the kiss he was bending to give her. When their lips met, she opened her mouth eagerly to his questing tongue. There was mutual need, a fierce longing. She willingly melded her body to his, surrendering to his passionate embrace that sought to make her body a part of his. She felt his hands wander down her back and cup her rear, pulling her even closer. Callie was on fire and knew he was, too. The evidence was pressed hard against her lower regions. Finally they broke the kiss, breathless, shaken, dizzy with the unspoken truth that lay between them.
Still holding her in a loose embrace, Hank looked down into her eyes and managed finally to say something. âSo I guess you missed me?â
âI guess you could say that,â she answered in a voice that was not quite her own.
Hank grinned. âI donât know if you noticed, but Iâm a little bit glad to see you.â
âOh, I noticed all right.â She moved closer and stretched upward. This time their lips met in another kiss, a kiss of affirmation, a kiss that promised all manner of things.
Obedient to Hankâs command to stay, Lulu had been pawing the porch, her tail tattooing against the wood. Finally she could stand it no longer. She leaped over the steps and launched herself at them. They went down in a heap, man, woman, and dog. Laughing, Hank pushed Lulu aside and managed to stand and pull Callie to her feet. âIâm guessing that Luluâs glad to see both of us,â Hank observed.
âYou think?â Callie asked. Lulu made quite a chaperone. But she wasnât so sure that she wanted a chaperone anymore.
âMaybe weâd better go inside and get some dinner,â Hank said.
Callie could swear she saw a flicker of pain in his eyes. What did that mean?
* * *
Hank stood and took the leftover pizza from the box, put it in a big Ziploc, and stashed it in his refrigerator. Then he gathered their paper plates and took them to the garbage can. I guess youâre wondering why I was in San Francisco.â He turned around to face her.
Thatâs the understatement of the year, Callie thought. Theyâd come into the house and immediately ordered in. While they waited, theyâd talked of this and that, everything except what heâd been doing in San Francisco. Callie had been full of questions, but somehow sheâd managed not to ask them.
âA little,â she said.
âYou remember I told you there was a little more story to my divorce?â
She nodded.
âHereâs the deal. I got a letter from my ex-wife. According to her there was a kink in the divorce.
